The Captain
Legacy of Naples Fishing - Capt Mike Bailey…a Naples born Naturalist, who lives the area waters…fish while hearing an Oral History of early Naples
Captain Michael Bailey
Captain Michael William Bailey was born in Naples to Margaret Ann Schryver and E. E. Bouge Bailey in 1957. He and his brother were the first twins born at the then Naples Community Hospital. Capt. Mike Bailey is a born naturalist, with salt water in his blood, inheriting fishing genes from his father, a first generation Naples native fishing guide.
Attending Naples schools, Capt. Mike grew up exploring, navigating and charting the rivers, canals, creeks and waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Capt. Mike enjoys the enviable local history of Naples and its waterways. As Naples grew, Capt Mike’s father entered the real estate business, becoming the first independent broker on Marco Island. Capt. Mike instinctively maintains a keen sense of fish, fowl, marine water life and the environment. He is an unofficial local marine archivist. Stories of Capt Mike have been published in local, and state publications and various electronic media. Additionally, he has won a myriad of awards and accolades for area and state fishing competitions.
Over the years, Capt. Mike has guided politicians, corporate executives, movie and rock stars as well as thousands of tourist and anglers.
Today, Capt. Mike may be found in his boat on the Gulf of Mexico or drifting past the mangroves in the waters surrounding Naples, operating his fishing charter business. Here, his life long learning curve for the water enables him to instinctively judge the environment. The tides, temperature, fronts, winds and moon are all monitored and translated by the Captain, for the safety of his passengers.
Capt. Mike Bailey attended Florida Institute of Technology and majored in Underwater Technology. He has spent tens of thousands of hours on the water, and holds a one-hundred ton ocean operator license.
His marine learning curve and fishing experience is extensive:
- Founding member of the Marco Guide Association
- Twenty year member of the Boca Grand Guide Association
- Member of the Organized Fisherman of Florida
- Associated with four different marinas in his lifetime
- Built 7 custom boats
- Owned and Managed a Stone Crab boat and business
